General Overview Rook is straight forward, honest, polite and obedient all to a point. Despite some past mistakes, he believes in the rule of law, order and maintaining a high standard of ethics. One would best think of him as a Kantian deontologist. While others may try to justify their actions, he tries to keep his actions so they don't need to be justified.
He's tried to be the best son he could be to his mother and now the best son/brother/uncle he can be since his adoption into the Barnes family.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strong ethics
Honest, straightforward
Kindness

severe dislike of medical/counseling
ethically bound
continues to live in shadows of older brother
need for "father" figure
'mama's boy'
'boy scout syndrome'

Ambitions He's already obtained part of his ambitions - a family (mostly a father). Now to work on the second part - his own family with wife and children.

Other ambitions are to continue to do his best work.

The ambition he knows he'll probably fail at: get people to understand his older brother isn't just a fratbro douchebag.
Hobbies & Interests Parkour, obstacle running, running, hiking, camping, weapons training, case law study.

Personal History Samual Bradley Johnson was born to Samual and Almathea Johnson on Datealis IV, which started as an early Terran colony formed shortly after the development of the warp drive. As a pre-Federation/pre developed warp drive technology, it didn't receive a lot of support as it developed. While best intentions were meant, the colony would be considered a failure after only a few generations.

It developed an anarchy and lawless element that slowly creeped and took over. Samaul was born and bred to be a law enforcer. Which led to his murder by criminal forces shortly before the birth of his first, and only, child.

Almathea found herself a newly widowed, single mother and did what she could in the colony falling to ruins to support herself and her child. She worked to instill her strong and unyielding ethics into her son and would have told anyone she succeeded.

Because she didn't know that he began running with the wrong crowd. Much of it was his fear of harm coming to his mother and thought by being a part of the criminal gang it would protect her. Besides, they weren't doing much. Just some assaults. Some robberies. Then attempted murders, murders. By then he was too far in to find a way out himself. He needed to keep reminding himself that he was low level, he may pull off a few robberies, but he didn't do the beatings or murders. He never robbed those that needed it (like his mother).

He hated what he'd become, especially as he saw his group conflicting more and more with police forces. He knew what happened to his father - raised by a mother that basically instilled a hero worship into a young boy that never met his father - and hated that he might be a part of the cause for someone else to grow up without their father.

When the Federation rediscovered the colony and sent Starfleet forces to bring the colony into order, Sam saw an opportunity to get out. He met a young security officer, James Barnes, and would pass on what information he could. At his young age, and meeting not only the first person from outside the planet but also his first 'alien' (Barnes is El Aurian), Sam transferred some of his father hero-worship to the older man.

It became unfortunate that his cronies discovered his duplicity. Barnes arranged for both Sam and his mother to be removed from the colony for their protection and back to Earth. Barnes, himself an adoptee into the Barnes family, set up the widow and young man with help from his extended family.

Abhorred that he brought the threat of harm to his own mother, Sam dedicated himself to the ideals of his father and what he learned from Ensign Barnes and his family. Glenn and Katherine Barnes took to the kid and almost from the start treated both Sam and Almathea as if they were already part of the family.

The adjustment to live on Earth, and the instant advancement of technology (replicators!!!) was difficult and Sam discovered that what skills he did possess weren't that helpful on a planet where no one really needed unskilled manual labor. However, once again, the Barnes family, especially the by now thought of 'older brother' James Barnes came to help. Sam would never be able to pass the requirements to enter Starfleet Academy but the path of enlistment was open to him.

He went to boot camp (finding it both challenging and difficult) determined he would be a security officer like his dad, his 'older brother' and his father replacement Glenn.

Sam left boot camp and was stationed at various locations in the first few years. His strong sense of work ethics, duty, honesty and compliance with regulations and his superiors served him well. He remained on the relative track for promotions through lower ranks. Once he achieved petty officer and had a distinguished, but not stellar, career, James was able to transfer him into his command.

Which is where he was forever straddled with the moniker "Rook" (which started off as the brotherly taunting of 'rookie' as the youngest/least experienced member of the team). He guess he should be grateful that James started using "monkeybutt" on his young niece and stopped using it for him.

The team was eventually detailed as Federation VIP protection. This was to be a year rotation, but it was extended for a second year due to their performance. Shortly after the extension, Rook was wounded in action. The grateful senator managed to fast track Rook to OCS. The snag came up when they realized that he wasn't eligible for officer status due to lack of advanced education.

Which was okay, he was put into the Warrant track (since all he cared about was being a security officer). His life would change in another way at the same time. As he was starting Warrant school, and at a gathering to celebrate his birthday, Glenn gave him the best present he could ever imagine: an adult adoption making Glenn his official father.

Rook suddenly had a family with siblings, nephews, nieces and others. Not only did he finally have a father, but he and James were now, offiically, brothers. Which Rook only occasionally regrets. Katherine became his stepmother as Almathea was still alive.

Rook graduated Warrant school and rejoined Barnes's team. However, the team was eventually revamped and Rook separated and made a security investigator. He continues to strive to be the best person he can be both professionally and personally.
