Family

Personality & Traits

General Overview Vincent is charming, confident and extremely intelligent, something he is perfectly aware of and sees little reason to hide. He enjoys people and attention, is comfortable in almost any social situation and is rarely intimidated by rank, reputation or species. He has expensive tastes, enjoys good food and alcohol, and likes surrounding himself with people who interest or entertain him.

He is pansexual and has had considerably more relationships with women than men, although relationship is sometimes a generous description. Vincent enjoys flirting and the pursuit that comes with it, with women generally being familiar territory and men presenting more of a challenge. He has never shown much interest in settling down and tends to be fairly honest about what he wants, even if his charm has occasionally allowed people to hear something rather more promising.

Inventing is the thing Vincent enjoys most. He is endlessly curious about how things work and even more interested in what else they might be capable of doing, sometimes with mixed results. He has produced technology used by governments, companies and militaries across the quadrant and does not generally lose sleep over what happens to people who choose to fight with it. He draws the line at civilians, particularly children and those unable to defend themselves, and has taken a much more personal interest when something he created has been turned against them.
Strengths & Weaknesses Vincent is highly intelligent, imaginative and resourceful, particularly when faced with a problem that has defeated more conventional approaches. He is also arrogant, easily bored and sometimes much more interested in whether something can be done than whether it should be. He dislikes restrictions, has little patience for unnecessary rules and does not always give enough thought to how somebody else may use an invention once it leaves his hands.
Ambitions To expand and invent, and grow his business. After all, he is a business man.
Hobbies & Interests Outside of work, Vincent enjoys swimming, boating and piloting, particularly smaller craft that allow him to actually feel involved in what the machine is doing. He enjoys good food, good alcohol and good company, and is equally happy at an expensive restaurant, hosting people himself or spending an evening somewhere with decent drinks and interesting conversation. Inventing also occupies much of his free time, although Vincent does not consider it a hobby so much as something he happens to be doing most of the time.

Personal History Vincent Holmes was born on Turkana IV in 2363, although Holmes was not the name he was born with, and neither was Vincent. By then the collapse of the colony's government and its separation from the Federation were history rather than events he remembered, and the factions, shortages and unreliable infrastructure that remained were simply part of everyday life.

Vincent started repairing equipment as a child and became increasingly good at improving it as he grew older, eventually attracting the attention of the faction controlling the area where he lived. By his teens he was repairing generators, communications systems and weapons for them, as well as creating some devices of his own when the available equipment failed to do what was required.

Vincent became increasingly interested in what existed beyond Turkana IV and, at nineteen, decided that he had seen enough of the colony. He had spent some time building a transporter from scavenged and repaired equipment and, when a civilian ship passed through the system, used it to transport himself aboard. The device had never been tested successfully over that distance with a living subject, but Vincent arrived alive and in one piece, which he has always considered sufficient proof that it worked.

Life away from Turkana IV suited him immediately. Vincent travelled for several years, initially exchanging engineering work for passage before beginning to sell designs of his own. He spent time both inside and outside Federation space and found no shortage of people willing to pay for someone capable of solving problems other engineers could not. During those years he chose the name Vincent Holmes for himself, after going through many alias. Even now, he never uses the name he used on Turkana.

By his late twenties some of his designs had begun appearing on black markets inside Federation space, eventually attracting official attention. The Federation traced several of them back to Vincent and contacted him when he was twenty-nine, partly because they were interested in the technology and partly because doing legitimate business with him was proving unnecessarily difficult. Vincent established V. Holmes & Co. soon afterwards, allowing him to take Federation contracts through rather more respectable channels. Even if there was no partners or others he worked with.

Becoming a legitimate supplier did not make Vincent exclusive to the Federation. V. Holmes & Co. has since sold technology to Federation organisations, Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans, independent governments and private companies, provided they are willing and able to pay. The success of the company has made Vincent wealthy, and he maintains residences in several places including Earth, Cardassia Prime and Romulan space, along with others he prefers not to advertise.

In 2398 Vincent established his latest residence and workshop on Faltan Station. The location offered obvious business opportunities, with several major powers operating in the surrounding region and a constant flow of people through the station. It also looked interesting, which Vincent considered reason enough to stay for a while.
