Cav doesn’t usually wear his ja’risia, the small metallic disk that Risians often wear on their foreheads, preferring to blend in. There's a look in his eyes that shows he's always sizing things up, always thinking about things. When he talks, he does so with a lot of gestures, using his hands a great deal.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Like most Risians, Cav is open and friendly, gregarious by nature. He makes friends quickly and easily, and is generous almost to a fault. He prides himself on being open-minded, and always tries to be nice but never fails to be kind. He’s got a very easygoing way of handling most situations, and has a tendency to treat most situations with a lack of urgency bordering on laziness. A man of big appetites, Cav believes in playing every bit as hard as he works. Cav is easy with people and always happy to talk to just about anybody.

What the lighthearted surface hides is an extremely observant and clever mind, and a stubborn resolve to see whatever he starts through. Cav has a strong sense of justice and fairness, and will do what he can to help people when it’s needed. As a Risian, Cav has a somewhat permissive attitude towards certain small crimes like smuggling or petty theft, but responds with outrage when confronted with serious crimes. This translates into making him a very determined investigator, able to channel his passions into his work. Because of his laidback personality, it’s easy for people to underestimate him or think that he’s a joke, but they are quickly disabused of that notion when they see him work. When he’s in a conflict or tense situation, he tends to prefer to talk to defuse the situation. If that fails, he tries to rely strictly on non-lethal methods, and learned unarmed combat extensively in order to have options when necessary.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Cav has a keen eye for observation and a surprisingly agile mind. As a Risian, he has a facility with languages, since billions of people pass through his planet every year. He’s great with people, and genuinely enjoys connecting with and getting to know them. Cav is a hell of a cook, a talented mixologist and an even better dancer.

Weaknesses: Cav suffers from an acute case of lack of ambition. For most of his career, his goal was to reach the position he has, and he’s not terribly interested in pushing farther with his career. Cav seems happy to drift from place to place as needed, working as an investigator. His tendency to empathize with people means that he can often lose objectivity in times when he should maintain it. He’s always been at odds with the combat side of security work, and is only functional with a phaser. People’s perception of him as a lazy goofball has caused him certain difficulties in his career, but he’s been unwilling to change it.
Ambitions On the outside, it appears Cav has few ambitions. He’s happy to do his work, enjoy himself while he can, and not let anything get him down. Underneath that, his ambition is always whatever case he’s working. He wants to do right by people, to help and protect, to correct injustice and prevent cruelty. Ultimately, he expects to return to Risa one day, open up a bar on a beach somewhere and tell stories of his illustrious Starfleet career to whoever will listen.
Hobbies & Interests Cav is very focused on enjoying life to the fullest, and is a good cook and a great bartender. Music has a tendency to focus him, and he often listens to all kinds of music, but especially something he can dance to. As a boy early on, Cav developed a skill with sleight-of-hand and close-up magic, which he did for money and which he does now as an icebreaker. He likes to talk to just about anybody. Having grown up on Risa, Cav came to love spending time in the ocean, and is as comfortable underwater as he is on his own two feet.

Personal History Cav was born on the Risian capital city of Nuvia, the third of five children. His parents, Ruvo Baral and Arias Hakin, were never married, but lived together most of the time. They both had other lovers and children from those relationships, and Cav’s family was large but loving. Ruvo and Arias were both members of the Risian Security Service, dedicated to keeping the peace on the pleasure planet. Despite—or perhaps because of—Risa’s reputation as a planet of peace and relaxation, there’s an element of organized crime, espionage and anarchy that’s drawn to the planet. Many things on Risa are permitted, but nobody has the right to infringe upon the lives and happiness of others, either tourists or residents.

Cav’s early life was a happy one. He was a good student, and when he wasn’t at school there was always something to do. Sometimes he worked on his uncle’s fishing boat, or studied the Risian lute with his godmother or wandered the streets of Nuvia, doing magic tricks on the street for tourists in exchange for money. His desires were never stifled, and the open and giving culture of Risa imbued him with a fearlessness of the world around him, which likewise fed into his curiosity. His parents never hid anything from him, either, and it was from them that he developed an early interest in security and investigative work. His parents always had new stories to tell about criminal schemes, spies and thieves and assassins that they’d come across in their time, and Cav soaked it all up.

As he got older, the stories that people told him and the places that they came from interested him more and more. They described other worlds and places he could only imagine. Risa was his home and he loved it wholeheartedly, but he also found himself drawn more and more to the idea of traveling off-world. Truthfully, in all likelihood nothing would have ever come from it if not for the disappearance of one of his teenage friends. One of Cav’s best friends was a boy named Nuzo, and they grew up together. When they were both seventeen, Nuzo took a job with some shady characters helping transport goods quietly by boat. Somehow, he ran afoul of his employers and ended up going missing, and whoever was responsible was never caught. It was a loss Cav felt deeply, and the lack of justice for his friend never sat right with Cav. Life went on, and his friend was just gone and that was it.

When he graduated school, he spent a couple years bumming around Risa, seeing more of his home planet. He worked boats or bars, explored the world, until finally his restlessness got the best of him and he enlisted in Starfleet. His family, as usual, were supportive of his ambitions and threw a party that was legendary even by Risian standards before he left. He passed the exams and was assigned to Basic Training at the base at Laikan on Andoria, and for the first time in his life he left his home planet.

He hated it.

Laikan was frigid and dark, the days were long and he spent most of his time getting yelled at. It was a slog, but he stayed with it, reminding himself every day why it was that he left. When he finally got out of basic, he went directly to Occupational Specialist School, focusing on security, like his parents. This time, he was sent to the OSS center in Rosllo, on Betazed, a place he liked much better. When he wasn’t studying and training, Cav was going out to explore Betazed. He spent a lot of time in the clubs and bars, and almost as much time on the beaches and oceans, and always made sure he had company around. The specialized training came more easily to him, much of it similar to the things his parents had taught him growing up.

When he graduated OSS, Cav was assigned to the USS Singapore as a PO3, primarily assigned to brig and armory duty on Gamma Shift. It was boring work, given that the Singapore was a science vessel and never had anybody in the brig for the entirety of his time aboard the Singapore. All the same, he got to see new things and meet new people, and he quickly made friends. He also started studying for a degree in Criminology, intending to move into investigative work within Starfleet.

With advancement to his PO2 rank, Cav was assigned to Starbase 60, a bustling Starbase more suited to somebody with Cav’s investigative ambitions. For the first time, Cav was able to get field experience in investigations, helping to catch criminals of all kinds, things that reminded him of the stories his parents always told him. During this time, he received a bachelor’s degree in Criminology, and his career path was cemented.

He stayed on Starbase 60 for nearly five years, advancing to PO1 before accepting an assignment as a Security Investigations Officer on a mining colony on Atraxas. It was a rough-and-tumble place on the frontier, not far from Klingon space. There was always something happening, though, and Cav liked it that way. He earned a reputation as a man with a keen investigative mind and a penchant for defusing trouble before it started. It was good work, and he liked it well enough that he likely would’ve settled down to stay for a long time. Unfortunately, after several years, a new Chief of Security transferred in; this one a young go-getter eager to make a name for himself. Cav’s easygoing nature and permissive attitude towards some of the more harmless and colorful characters rubbed the Chief the wrong way and after several conflicts that Cav couldn’t defuse, he decided it was time to move on to greener pastures. He had enough time in to apply to the Senior Enlisted Academy and become a Chief Petty Officer. He left Atraxas for the Academy on Mantilles, and at the end of the ten-week course he had his new rank, and a new assignment as the Security Investigations Officer on the newly recommissioned Faltan Station.
