Losing Yourself

465 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Mission 2: Into The Breach
Location: Aiman-Tamar Quarters
Timeline: MD04 - 2100 Hours

Leyla finally got away from work, if only for a moment. She’d gone to her quarters to clean up. Between barely stopping since she got there to digging around in the wreckage, to what the Captain told her about keeping the investigation to herself, she was exhausted.

Her bag still sat in the middle of the floor of her quarters, waiting to be unpacked. Everything sent ahead of time, which wasn’t much was sitting in a few small boxes.

The furthest thing from her mind was being told to keep this type of thing to herself, to investigate something without being able to tell others what it was she was investigating. This was a new experience to her.

Collapsing onto her bed, she laid back and stared at the ceiling. Here she had to keep things quiet and lie about things she was investigating. There are only a few others who knew, and this was going to be hard to keep up with.

But she didn't want to deal with that in that moment. Leyla sat up and slipped out of her uniform jacket, tossing it aside. She didn't really care where it landed. She was far out of her element, even given her past. She'd had to do things she always regretted to save her own life.

"Computer, begin personal secure log." The computer gave the standard sound of acknowledgement before she started speaking. "My first day on Faltan and everything is a mess. I missed the opening ceremony, only to arrive when a Klingon ship that was here exploded. I don't mind being thrown into investigations, never have. But this one was different. Captain Refelian and Commander M'Mira have told me to keep my results private, to not say why I'm actually looking into things. To say it is for scientific research.

I understand the need for it, but it still feels wrong. I'm going to respect their wishes. Any results that come up with something new goes directly to them. But I haven't stopped working since I got here, and I'm completely exhausted. Nothing has changed since I gave my report, other than trying to dig deeper into trying to find where the explosives came from exactly. There is no doubt who they belong to, but whether they are ours or a visitors is yet to be determined. Computer, end log and secure file."

Finally climbing off the bed, Leyla put her uniform jacket up and dug into one certain box. She had to lose herself for a while, and her books were the best way to do that. Getting lost in an old book always helped her calm down, and after this day? That was what she needed before drifting off to sleep.
