Changing the Guard

558 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 2: Into The Breach
Location: Cardassian Embassy
Timeline: The Morning After “Tea”

Taken awoke feeling particularly energized after tea with the Romulan’s. For the first time in a long time she was up before her attendant came in to wake her.

She threw open the curtains, and went about her morning routine. She dressed herself in a deep almost black Crimson pant suit. The jacket fastened asymmetrically and in an odd angular way. She opted for a short ankle boot.

Since arriving on Faltan, Rakena has forgone the tradition of inspecting the guard as they changed company in the mornings. This was due in part to her usually slow wake up, and also the frigid cold of the planet.

She sat for breakfast in her private apartments as Gul Reskat and Undersecretary Korin came in as they always did while she ate.

“There has been a general announcement about Captain Refeilan’s departure from Faltan.” Said Korin, reading from a copper toned PADD. “Commander —- has taken command.”

Rakena nodded. “Very well, I’d like to meet with the Commander in the next couple of days. Get a feel for the change.”

Korin nodded and made a quick note. “I will see to making the appointment later.”

“Was there anything more?” The Ambassador asked before wiping her mouth and placing the napkin on her plate.

Korin shook his head. “The latest news from Cardassia Prime has been transferred to your office for you to peruse.”

Rakena smiled softly. “Thank you Korin.” She stood. “If you could get me my coat, Gul Reskat and I will be going to inspect the guard soon.”

Korin nodded and departed the Room.

The Gul shifted uncomfortably. “That really isn’t necessary Ambassador.” He had a look of concern in his eyes.

“Nonsense.” She said dismissively. “I don’t plan to make it an everyday occurrence, but I should at least show my face every so often.”

Korin returned with a deep Charcoal coloured cape sleeved coat. It was adorned with a embellished belt and Cardassian emblems. The man helped Raken put it on.

As she fastened her belt, the Ambassador looked to Gul Reskat. “Assemble the Guard.” She said taking leather like gloves from Korin.

Gul Reskat nodded and left the room with a distinct purpose in his step.

Rakena took a deep breath. It had been some time since she had taken part in such ceremony.

The air was crisp as Rakena exited the Embassy into the courtyard in front of the building. She stopped at the bottom of the steps.

Gul Reskat was a few meters ahead of her, standing with his back to her. In front of him, two contingents of the Cardassian Guard were assembled in perfect ranked files. From beyond her sight, Rakena heard a loud horn sounded.

The two contingents began precise movements as the marched between the others ranks and the former duty division march off, leaving the morning Guard before her. Reskat turned and marched to meet Rakena. “Changing of the Guard complete, permission to carry on with inspection?” He asked in a dignified whisper.

Rakena nodded, and the Gul led the way. The aged woman was doing a lovely job keeping up with her Military Advisor’s pace.

They weaved their way through the perfect files of Cardassian men and women. It had been a long time since Rakena had felt so young.
