630 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 1: The Return to Faltan
Location: Jaifnard - Merchant convoy
Timeline: MD06 - 2222 PM

Arriving at the merchant convoy, Sarah smirks and gives her orders to the others to move towards the wagons as she gave a stop sign to Hawk "Hunter, you are with me...that wound of yours need some stitching" She spoke pointing at his hand as she walks towards her tent that was average size that you can walk in it "Sit down" She orders.

Having sat, Akoni kept his eyes on her as she started unwrapping his hand. He was caught up in the flow of fathoming her, instead of watching what it was she was doing. "How long you've been doing this?" he asked.

Cleaning the wound a bit as it gives Akoni most likely some pain waves "I do this longer than I had hoped for, it is now a way of life Lieutenant, why you ask" Sarah did not look at him as she was tending towards the wound.

"Just..curious," he had grimaced as the pain shot through him, and looking now at his hand instead of her, worked on relaxing his arm. "So, when was the last time you had a vacation?"

She laughs a bit and looked at him "Really? I guess I had one back when I was still a cadet...maybe before that?" Sarah said with a smile as she looked at the hand as it slowly closes the gap by the medical tricorder she was using "People would say I am pretty dedicated to my work"

The pain subsiding, Akoni returned to looking at her profile. With her large eyes and full lips, she was actually pretty, but he doubted she ever thought about it. "So how do you do it?" he wanted to know. "How do you cope?"

"How do I cope?" Sarah looked at him as she rolled some bandage around his hand "Well, the taste of blood is something you get used to after a long period of time Lieutenant" She said a bit with a smirk "But I guess I just do what needs to be done and having my mind on zero"

“And your mind is always on zero?”

"Not always...I try" Sarah said with a shrug "The screams still come back to me every now and then. But it does not really change the outcome of what needs to be done" She straps the cloth and looked at Akoni "Sometimes you need to make the moral choice, it's you or them'

"Yeah," Akoni nodded, and looked away as he thought about how true that was. His eyes returned to hers. "You ever see yourself doing anything else?"

Leaning backward and looking at him with some sadness in her eyes "I once thought that yes, but that dream flew away during the Dominion Wars" She smiled a bit painfully.

Giving her a small, yet caring, smile in return, Akoni placed what had been his wounded hand over hers. "I'm sorry..." he said quietly, "and for taking you there. Sometimes...I ask too many questions."

Looking back at him "Don't worry about it. Past is the past for a reason. Everything we do now is for the best of tomorrow" Sarah said in her poor attempt to be wise.

"And it's influenced by the past," he added, and feeling as if he understood her, perhaps, just a little bit more, his eyes seemed to be searching hers. "If you ever...need a listening ear, I'm here."

Standing up and smiling at that "I will remember that" Sarah said with a smile as she walks towards the exit of the medic tent "Get some rest....you need it for upcoming operations"

Akoni followed her and now faced her at the entrance. He matched her smile, "Like always," yet frowned, out of concern, as he walked away.
