| Personal History | Sitka was found abandoned, at not quite a week old. Genetic testing against Federation records turned up her human father, who claimed no contact with anyone that would have produced a half-Romulan child. It was impossible to determine if he was lying or if he had encountered a Romulan spy presenting themselves as something else. Either way, he refused to acknowledge her. And not knowing if she was evidence of potential espionage, the Federation was unwilling to reach out to the Romulan Empire to try and identify her mother for fear of causing a diplomatic incident. Sisi was placed for adoption on a small backwater colony planet where she would be more or less out of the way and unknown. The colony was primarily human, which meant that Sisi stood out from the local community. She was generally accepted, but was not allowed to do everything her peers could do. Concern about her hybrid heritage meant she was not allowed to roughhouse with other children, due to fears of her accidentally harming them. Instead, her parents channeled her energy into non-contact activities such as dance, gymnastics and swimming. Her parents tried to explain her origins in ways that were age-appropriate, but also left her with the impression that if the Romulan Empire found out about her, they would take her away and she’d never see her family again. As a teenager, Sisi started reading on interstellar law, trying to understand her situation and the questions her parents were unable to answer. Her interest in her own legal status led her into the formal study of law, with a focus on interstellar and interplanetary law. That focus meant two areas of practice. Interstellar business or Starfleet. With little interest in business, Sisi enrolled in Starfleet. It was at the Academy that she started wearing her hair so it covered her ears. While she was careful never to lie or actively affirm anyone’s assumptions, she often let people assume she was part Vulcan. San Francisco and the Academy were cosmopolitan enough that she came into contact with her first Romulans — and did everything she could to avoid them. As ships rarely have a JAG officer stationed aboard, Sisi spent her first several years supporting more senior officers who travelled from ship to ship. This was sometimes done from Earth and sometimes done by traveling with the senior officers, depending on the case and its needs. Occasionally, she travelled on her own to gather information at the direction. After her promotion to Lieutenant, her duties included a mix of support for senior officers and handling her own cases. Faltan Station is her first long term assignment. |
