Personal History Born 2363 on one of Earth’s many ‘lost colonies’, she is the elder of two children. Her colony, called Sanctuary, was colonized by scientists, intellectuals and even some corporate entrepreneurs who wanted the freedom to explore their sciences and such as they wanted within their own morality without being forced to create weapons of war as was common on their original colony. It went well for a time until violent disagreement caused a partial breakdown in law and order. Different factions with their own ‘security forces’ going toe to toe and stabbing in the dark while regular citizens got caught in the cross fire.

Shannon’s mother was one these. A survivor of the streets she knew how tough things could be. Her neighborhood had partially banded together for safety so were used to taking justice into their own hands, it was just safer if one didn’t involve the ‘law’ unless you couldn’t avoid it. Gemma, Shannon’s mother was street smart but had barely finish high school. She worked here and there, meeting up with Steven Royce. A slacker, minor criminal and alcoholic he could be charming when he wanted which is how he got Gemma. It went ok for while until his gambling money away and almost constant fighting caused stress.

Shannon, supported by her mother was a happier child than otherwise but still would become even more quiet and withdrawn as she would sit in the other room reading as her parents shouted and sirens went on outside. Finally when Shannon was 7 and her sister, Juliet was a year her mother couldn’t deal with it anymore. She had heard of a Dr. Helen Magnus taking over one of the main cities and actually bringing it to heel. Clever and dedicated the good Doctor became a rallying point for anyone who wanted to bring the colony back to its former glory as a place of peace and innovation.

So bribing an official she got the marriage disbanded and she moved with no forwarding address. Neither Shannon or Juliet really have seen their father since but neither really cared, it’s like he was dead for all the thought they gave him. He tried to track them down a few times but they kept moving around the city and Dr. Magnus’s security forces were second to none. Her mother had heard sometime before Shannon hit her teens that he’d joined the Orion Syndicate though no doubt as much as mooch slacker there as he was anywhere else.

Shannon will never bring up her father, childhood, or anything else especially negative. She is naturally private and experience has made her even more so. She always had a harder time dealing with people than she did books and computers so she dove into the latter two with abandon. She had a knack for understanding how computers worked, how to protect them, how to hack them. This was a favorite pastime. She loved her mother and adored her younger sister, for whom she would do most anything to protect.

Despite having little education, Gemma’s drive parleyed her knowledge into a respectable retail business over the years. And the Federation finally discovered their wayward colony, by now Dr. Magnus was the primary leader on the planet and was able to work out a good agreement with the Federation for their support of her reform programs.

It was about this time Shannon began to devour everything she could get her hands on about the Federation. Their ideals, history and especially their tech. With her mother and sister now safe and happy she threw herself into qualifying for Starfleet Academy. There was great opportunity there to work with some of the most advance tech in the galaxy plus it appealed to the inner sense of justice she always had in the back of her mind. And to be fair, while things were much better now she wanted off her home world. While her sister leaned more toward becoming a journalist, Shannon got into Starfleet Academy and excelled at tech based studies, she did fairly well at anything survival related (her mother believed in being prepared) as well though interpersonal interactions still gave her trouble. She was approached for Starfleet Intelligence in the last semester of her senior year. A chance to hack bad guy tech and use some of the most advanced equipment while fighting for a good cause appealed to Shannon, especially as she would work quietly in a office unbothered for the most part. She spent another year training for that before finally being assigned.

Her last name is an ancient name from the Celtic Isles of Earth meaning, ‘Guardian’. Shannon means ‘little wise one’.

Her sister, much fewer memories of their childhood issues is a known investigative journalist and happily married to Starfleet Engineer.
