Meeting The CO

Posted on Wed Oct 7th, 2020 @ 2:00am by Commander M'Mira & Lieutenant Rohan Read

912 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Mission 3: Diplomacy, what’s that?
Location: Captain’s Lounge

After stowing his duffel bag into his quarters, Rohan headed for the Command hub. It had a long time since he’d stepped foot into a command centre of a Starfleet base. As the turbolift approached deck 1, Rohan tugged at his collar.

The lift doors slid open and Read slowly stepped into the command centre. Everyone was busying themselves with their work. He slowly walked through the busy command centre towards the Captain’s Office.

He sighed before tugging at his collar again. He hated wearing a uniform again. He pressed the door chime and waited for permission to enter.

"Come in," called a purring voice. Another 15 minutes and it is time for my morning nap M'Mira thought to herself.

Rohan strolled into the CO’s office resisting the urge to yank at his collar again.

The five foot tall Caitian prowled to the front of her desk as Read came in. "And how can I help you today?" she asked.

“I’m Lieutenant Rohan Read, I’ve been assigned to Faltan Station as your Chief Strategic Operations Officer. I’m here to help you with your problem with the locals and help the transition to the new Starbase once it’s been completed.” Read said in a casual tone.

The moment that Read mentioned the Starbase, M'Mira's happy face drastically changed. Her tail stood stiff and the hairs raised on her back and arms. "Therrre arrre no prrroblems. I think you arrre mistaken in yourrr assignment, Lieutenant."

“Not according to my mission orders, ma’am.” Read said, he’d done the required reading about the tense situation with the Faltans.

"Then yourrr inforrrmation is in errrrrrrorrrr," M'Mira replied simply. "Everrr since I have taken overrr, therrre have been no incidents."

“Yes, it seems you have been lucky. Starfleet feels something else is going on which is why I’ve been brought in to investigate.” Read replied, keeping his tone neutral and calm.

"Oh?" the prima donna asked curiously. "Do tell."

“As you’re probably aware, Taga has been making off world to trips to Union and Rayea. We believe they are looking at joining together in some sort of alliance. Of course, we have no hard evidence of this but it’s highly probable. All three aren’t fans of the Federation for various different reasons.” Read explained.

M'Mira growled. "This is trrrue. Go on."

“My role will be gather information for you and Starfleet command so we can keep in the know and adjust our tactics or methods accordingly.”

"And just how do you anticipate doing that? The Falteans do not talk to us. I have had inforrrmation frrrom other sources. Wherrre arrre you going to get yourrrs?"

“Simple, ma’am. I’m going to look for it.” The Lieutenant replied simply.

"Well, good luck with that. Taga and her followerrrrs arrre as tight lipped as mewling."

“You’d be surprised how boastful if you do a little ego stroking.” Read replied with a smile. “But I have heard that getting information out of them is difficult, I hope to employ some different techniques to get the information.”

"You may wish to speak to Ms. Templeton. She has seemed to have some luck with Taga and the Falteans."

“Ms. Templeton?” Read repeated as he pulled out a PADD from his pocket. The name rang a bell but he couldn’t place it. “Ah, yes. The Federation News Service Reporter for the region. Yes, I’ll be speaking to her, she’s on my list.”

"I see. So what else do you plan?"

“I plan to visit them, both in a professional and unprofessional manner. I’ll need to work with your intelligence department for that as I don’t want to ruin any ongoing work they doing.” Read replied.

"What do you mean unprrrofessional? I doubt Taga will meet with you forrrmally," the Caitian worried, her tail swishing more vehemently.

“I’ve spent all of my career being undercover. If I can’t see her professionally then I’ll make sure I see her in other ways.” Read said proudly.

"We do have an intelligence deparrrtment, Lieutenant."

“Yes, Commander, Faltan does have an operational Intelligence department.” Read replied with a smile. “I’m fully briefed on them and will be making contact over the next couple of days.”

"Just make surrre that you do not overstep yourrrself. I know that they would not take kindly to it," M'Mira warned.

“I have no intention too, ma’am. I know how hard Intelligence departments work to get things set up. I’m planning to work with that department before I start any of my own lines of enquiry.” Rohan replied with a slight respectful bow of his head.

M'Mira was not sure what to make of this person. However, Strategic Officers always were said to have more information. What did he know about Taga and her cronies? What did he know about the wars with the Klingons? How did this all add up? M'Mira did not know. What she did know is that there was something about Read that she did not like. She would have to keep an eye on him. "Verrry well. I am surrre that you have duties to attend to. Thank you for coming."

“Not a problem, ma’am. Thank you for seeing me. If you need me for anything please let me know, I’ll do my best to assist you.” Read replied.
