After Sarah had left, Sabine had stared around her for quite some before her eyes finally felt to heavy to keep open. She knew what was coming when sleep came, but couldn’t keep herself awake any longer.
The knife, keeping her pinned to the wall my her shoulder. Eyes blurring from the blood loss. Her body exposed in ways she was uncomfortable with. Fingernails being peeled away. Skin on her leg slowly being pulled away, inch by inch. The exposed flesh burned. Skinner’s face, smiling…
Sabine sat straight up, sweat pouring down her face. Having sat up so quickly, she became light headed and took a few deep breaths. The images were so vivid, as if they were happening in that moment. She looked down to her hand, her fingers where she’d lost the nails still wrapped. Her leg wrapped but still felt like it was burning. The only part that had been fully healed was her shoulder, but even that still ached as if the knife was still sitting inside it.
“Come on, Spider. You are better than this. You screwed up, and you need to set it right.” Sabine’s eyes shut tight as she went through breathing techniques that she’d learned years ago to calm herself. ”Cadet Rona. You aren’t focused on your breathing. You should not allow outside distractions get to you.
The voice of her Academy instructor came flooding back. The one who had taught her almost everything about being in Intelligence. “Outside distractions. That’s what did this. My soft spot for children sealed my fate, and Charlotte’s. I need to find a way to fix this,” she stated to no one but herself, in a quiet whisper. She allowed her eyes to open, knowing sleep wasn’t going to come again.
