Mission 2: Into The Breach
Location: Romulan Embassy
Timeline: MD01 - 1141
The Romulan Embassy building had been constructed during the last week. Telhas had overseen construction personally and made sure that everything looked like it should according to Nevala's plans. However, he had his chief engineer make some modifications. The building was to be shielded with some of the most sophisticated shielding available and it would be powered by its own quantum singularity reactor. Both would arrive soon. Due to the bombing almost two weeks ago he had stayed at the building site together with the eighteen remaining guards of the garrison posted here initially.
Standing in his personal quarters, which were still as empty as the remaining building, Telhas looked down from a balcony into the atrium, which connected all decks. Being in the top deck gave him a good view on everything happening downwards and outwards. The atrium's windows gave view to the embassy's ground in front, which was still a mess. Nevala had no time to sketch plans for the gardens outside before she had been abducted. Telhas hoped that she would be released soon.
"Mylord, the Ket-Cheleb has arrived," one of his personal guards interrupted his thoughts.
Telhas smiled. The D'deridex-class warbird ISW Ket-Cheleb was the flagship of his Kae'raktar Regiment and his personal flagship as well. Though not the fastest ship he owned, it was the one with greatest firepower. But more important, it was the one that would bring what was missing. "Tell them to beam my Remans down first. We need them to set up everything."
"Yes, Mylord." The guard left the balcony.
Telhas went back into his penthouse and waited. It did not take long before a group of five soldiers in the green uniforms of his Reman guards materialized in front of him. Three presented their rifles, the other two presented their swords.
"Company B of the Reman Battalion reporting for duty, Lord Telhas!" the Reman man presenting his sword called in a military manner.
Telhas gave him a nod of acknowledgement. "Commander S'kenkh, good to have you here." Then he turned to the female officer. A young woman who looked almost Romulan, with long black hair almost reaching her waist, but pale skin as a Reman. "Timarik, you became a fine young woman since we met last time. Your father is most proud of your progress in my battalion."
Timarik Saeihr cha'Havrannen was the best example of the prestige the service in his House Guards gave. Her father was the Reman R'serk cha'Havrannen, commanding officer of his Reman Battalion with the rank of knight commander, and her mother was Romulan working-class. For a Reman, this was more than he could ever expect. Telhas knew the couple very well, he had wed them once. Now Timarik was a lieutenant in this battalion and executive officer of B company. The young woman curtsied.
"Commander, I want your troops to protect the perimeter of our embassy, fix bayonets," Telhas ordered.
"How many?" S'kenkh asked.
Telhas thought for a second. "Thirty should do. The remainder shall install the singularity and the shield generators. Any questions?"
"Any threats beyond those mentioned in the transfer order?" S'kenkh asked.
"None which I am aware of. Move!" Telhas ordered. The Remans saluted and left the room.
The next to arrive was Knight Commander Alidar R'Mor, the commanding officer of the warbird. He saluted. "Senator, where do you want those strange pillars?"
Telhas handed him a PADD. "Place the pair of pillars here," he pointed to the entrance into his penthouse, "and the remaining four at these places." Again, he pointed at the places where he wanted the items. This time, they were at the corners of the 120 squared meters of the private part of his penthouse. "Take the PADD with you. Sir Alidar." Telhas saluted.
Alidar returned the salute and beamed back on the ship. Telhas waited a few minutes before the pillars were beamed to their positions. They were 1.5 meters tall, made of granite and covered with engravings in Vulcan. It had taken Telhas a lot of effort to obtain these. They were intended to be at his palace on the planet Artaleirh, but after the attack on his embassy he had decided to bring them here. They had a secret to them he would tell those who deserved to know it. After he made a walk around and was sure that each was placed at the right position, he acknowledged the correct transport, so that further equipment could be transported to the embassy.
Furniture was beamed into the rooms, exactly to the places where it were intended to be. For the penthouse it meant a sofa here, table there, everything Telhas and Nevala needed to feel at home. Finally, his harp materialized in the center of his living room. He smiled and took a seat at the harp, playing some chord progressions.
Then he was interrupted again by a young Vulcan woman being beamed in. "Looks better than I thought," she said.
"Learned less than I thought," Telhas replied. Of course he recognized her wearing his Cheleb-Khor Regiment's uniform. And of course he knew her rank was that of lieutenant. But he wanted to give the chance to correct her mistake.
She thought for moment what he could have meant before she saluted. "Lieutenant N'Veyan reporting in, Duke Telhas." She smirked. "And with me the second platoon of company B of the second battalion of the best regiment in your guards."
"Oh, really? And I thought you were in the Cheleb-Khor Regiment?" Telhas mocked her.
N'Veyan's anger could be seen in her eyes and heard in her voice. "If you consider us so unworthy, why did you want us here?"
"Still so easy to enrage?" Telhas asked with a calm voice. "Be assured that I do not consider you unworthy, but unlike my other regiments you have not proven you are even at equal standing yet. And you should keep a little more of your composure. After all, you represent my House."
She clenched her teeth. "Yes, my Duke."
"Lieutenant, I ask you to familiarize yourself with the embassy and the surroundings. You will serve as honour guard, trillpas for officers and sergeants, lirpas for all others. Any questions?" Telhas looked at her for a moment.
N'Veyan had calmed down again. "No, my Duke."
"You are dismissed then." Telhas started to play the harp again, but noticed that she was still standing. He stopped playing the harp. "Anything else?"
"Yes, my Duke." N'Veyan took a rod out of her jacket, about 40cm long and 2cm in diameter. It looked like ivory, with ancient Vulcan writings in platinum being inserted. "They found this in the diggings in Cheleb-Khor you funded. I thought you might want to have it."
Telhas rose to his feet and went slowly towards her, looking on the rod until he took it with his right hand. He felt how his telepathy connected with it. Pointing it on N'Veyan he felt connected to her through it. He could sense the presence of life through it. She made a step back, looking for a place to hide, but relaxed once he stopped pointing the item at her. "A Rod of Kel. Nice. A wise decision to bring it here, Lieutenant. Anything else?"
She shook her head no.
"Dismissed," Telhas said grinning. He had been looking for a Rod of Kel for a long time. These were psionic weapons used by the ancient Vulcans. One could hurt or even kill living beings with them, but one could also heal them. It was exactly what stood there written in platinum in ancient Vulcan. Plus a warning that burning thy enemies might as well burn thyself.
All the electronics went to live all of a sudden. Telhas smiled. It meant the quantum singularity had been installed. A moment later, the door chime rang. Telhas went to the door, and opened it. At the same time he sent a telepathic signal to the newly arrived pillars flanking the door. Timarik stood in front of him and saluted. "Lord Telhas, reporting, singularity is up and running. Shield is also up and running. Transport inhibitors up and running as well."
Telhas nodded. "Excellent. Assign ten guards, patrols in groups of two, stay inside the building. Remainder are dismissed. Leaving the building is allowed, but only in groups of at least five, rules for combat area apply."
"Understood, Lord Telhas." Timarik saluted.
"Oh, and Lieutenant," Telhas smiled, "Good work. Please tell the company that I am proud of them."
Timarik beamed with pride. Commander S'kenkh had tasked her with the installation of the items. "Yes, Lord Telhas."
"Dismissed, Lieutenant."
Timarik saluted and turned on her heels. Telhas closed the doors and activated the pillars again telepathically. He wondered what the young woman would achieve in his guards. She showed potential, maybe she would command the Reman Battalion one day like her father did now. Time would tell. He settled again at his harp and started playing it again.
