A Complicated Medical Record

Posted on Tue Oct 16th, 2018 @ 12:06am by Lieutenant JG Jonah Masters & Lieutenant Calista Aereen MD

1,180 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Mission 1: The Return to Faltan
Location: Faltan Station - Medical Hub
Timeline: MD 17 - 1100 hours

Jonah walked into the medical hub, surprised by the massive size of the hospital. He had gotten used to the small sickbay on the Nova class, USS Archimedes. The entire hub dwarfed deck four on the entire ship.

Not knowing quite where to start, he dropped at what appeared to be a reception station. "Um, hello?"

A nurse looked up, "Yes, how can we help you?" she asked.

"Chie.." he started before remembering he was a commissioned officer now. "Sorry, Lieutenant Jonah Masters. I have a follow up appointment and a boarding physical with Doctor Aereen," he answered pleasantly.

"She is on the third level, if you head up there she should be easy to find." The Nurse said giving the office a smile.

Jonah nodded. Feeling a bit sheepish, he asked, "Is there a lift? Bit of an injury makes stairs difficult." The nurse nodded with a sympathetic smile, pointing to a set of doors a few feet away.

A short lift ride later and Jonah was deposited into a large room with smaller private rooms around the circumference. He spotted the doctor from the image on her personnel file. A slim, red haired Trill in the blue uniform of the medical division

Aereen was standing in the middle of the inpatient ward on the third level, it was finally up and running and the CMO was overseeing the final checks as a few of the duty medical officers tended to the few patients coming and going, mostly routine medical checks.

"Hello, Doctor Aereen?" He greeted the woman by name but with an inflection that implied he was quite sure. "Lieutenant Jonah Masters. I'm here for my my medical check and some follow ups. I've had some recent major injuries which are still being treated," he explained.

"Mister Masters," she said with a friendly smile, "Why don't you grab a seat in there," gesturing to one of the private exam rooms off the main ward, "and I'll be right in."

Jonah nodded with a smile. He was sure she would want to review his file before proceeding. He figured it might take some time. Settling his read end against the edge of a biobed, he waited but only very briefly.

"Alright, let's start with the recent injuries, what exactly are you being treated for." She asked, pulling up his file on the computer but leaving it for the patient to explain first.

Jonah took a deep breath in before launching into his recent injuries. "The Archimedes, my last duty station, encountered the USS Potemkin, a hundred year old Constitution class ship, in the Briar Patch, seemingly completely dead. To make a long story short, the ship had been equipped with an experimental artificial intelligence. It killed the original crew before losing power and drifting into the Briar Patch."

"What we didn't know was that the AI was inhabiting one of our crewmates through nanites accidentally injected into him a month earlier. The final showdown involved swords, because we sparred with each other for exercise and fun, and," Jonah paused realizing his short story was long. "Sorry, long short story. Anyway, he cut my right leg deeply with one of his swords, shoved one through my here," Jonah indicated he left abdomen, "and eviscerated me. Literally, my guts hanging out..."

"So, I'm still getting physical therapy for the leg and abdominal wounds. And, of course, the counseling department is going to have a field day with me," he finished with a smile.

"Alright, well, if you don't mind removing your shirt and pants, I'd like to take a look myself just to insure there's no issues with the injuries," she said gesturing to a curtain in the corner and a hospital gown handing, some people didn't enjoy sitting in their underwear in front of a doctor

Jonah already had his jacket off when the doctor handed him the gown. With an amused smiled, Jonah took the gown. "It's okay. I've been in Intel a long time, I'm not shy about these things. Frequent examinations are a requirement, with or without clothes."

Jonah watched as the curtain was drawn closed before he removed his shirt, kicked off his boots and dropped his pants.

Aereen grabbed a medical tricorder and took several scans of the areas the Lieutenant had spoken of. "Looks like whoever put you back together last time did a good job. Keep up the physical therapy and let me know if there are any problems with them that develop."

"I'd like to complete the scar revision," Jonah noted, punctuating the comment by drawing his finger across the white scar that ran the length of his abdomen, just above his naval. He pulled up his pants and secured his belt. "I was told a few more dermal regenerator sessions."

"We can schedule those, if it's alright with you I'd like to hold off till next week. Our new multispectral-regenerator unit is arriving, it will produce much better results than manual regeneration sessions." Aereen said.

"It's no rush," Jonah agreed. "I've also been ordered to continue counseling sessions, Doctor. Do you have any recommendations?" Jonah asked.

"As a general rule I try to stay out of patients heads, except for neurosurgery. Counsellor Martha Rhodes is arriving in a few a days, I can have her contact you once she's settled and arrange a time to talk," the Doctor said.

"That's understandable. I'll make an appointment once she's arrived and prepared to see patients," Jonah answered reasonably. "No need to bother yourself with arranging the schedules of others, I'm sure you have plenty of more important things to do."

She nodded and turned her attention to the readings. "Everything else looks to be pretty good. I'll take a blood sample to check that, but otherwise you appear to be in good health," Aereen said preparing a hypo to draw a sample.

"I was required to keep myself mission ready, doctor. SFI doesn't allow their assets to become unhealthy. I guess the same will be true for Security work," he answered seriously.

"Well it appears to work. We'll arrange an appointment for the last of your treatments once the regenerator is in. Unless there's anything else you're free to go, Lieutenant," Aereen said.

Jonah wondered a moment about mentioning the alteration in his DNA from the incident in the nebula eight months earlier, but decided it wasn't important. That nebulous DNA wasn't doing any harm according to Doctor Stringer, and in fact, it had come in quite handy from time to time. He shrugged his duty jacket back over his shoulders and zipped it up. "I'll look for the appointment then," he agreed. "Pleasure meeting you, doctor."

He nodded and turned toward the doors. As an afterthought, he turned and asked, "Mind if I call you 'doc'?" It was stupid, but it was what he'd called Stringer, the first doctor he had actually liked.

"Doc is fine." She said with a smile.

Jonah nodded. "See ya later, doc." He winked at her before turning to walk out of the medical division's hub.
