After the podium was put up, Catrina handed out the rest of the assignments and decided she wanted to turn in for the night. Well, that was the excuse she gave her team. Her mind was elsewhere, especially after her visit from Sarah’s sister. She went back to her room, not even stopping by her office like she normally would, almost wishing Sarah was there waiting for her.
But as she stepped into the darkened quarters, there was no sign anyone had been there since she had been that morning. Running her hand gently along her desk, she moved towards her holographic emitter. “Computer, lock doors, no interruptions until further notice.” The computer gave an acknowledging beep and Cat put her security codes into her emitter.
Scrambling the signal so that no one on the station could pick it up, she quickly dialed into Sarah’s emergency beacon frequency. She didn’t sit, but instead paced. Unable to locate signal, came the voice she had setup on her emitter. Cat’s heart sank as she tried it again for good measure. The same thing once more happened.
Shutting down the emitter, she picked up a PADD that was on her desk and threw it across the room at the wall, not caring that it smashed before falling to her knees. Tears started to stream down her cheeks as she looked out the door that led to her balcony. It was dark outside, stars were shining. But that didn’t matter to her.
Her heart was pounding, aching. “Sarah…” she whispered into the room. It didn’t matter that they’d only technically spoken twice. It didn’t matter that she knew very little about the woman. All she knew was how she felt about her. She managed to drag herself over to her bed, burying her face in the pillows before crying herself to sleep.
