Kara emerged from the bedroom, she’d taken the opportunity of baby nap time to try and get some extra rest. The birth of the baby hadn’t gone entirely to plan, and she’d ended up having an old fashioned Caesarean section. It wasn’t done very often, only in complicated circumstances so she was feeling sore and tired something the doctor had told her to expect. “Hey ...” She offered a smile as she slowly moved to sit on the sofa.
Tomer snuggled into Kara. "Ah," he whispered, putting his arm around her. "There's my brave wife and mother of our child." He put his other hand on her lap. "Did you get some good rest? Lord knows that our little Captain won't likely be asleep much longer."
She was about to speak when the door chime rang. “Visitors?” She looked at Tomer curiously. She’d completely forgotten her father was coming to visit.
"Have you forgotten?" Tomer asked his wife while kissing her forehead. "I think you have still got baby brain, Spots." He heard the baby cry. "Well, that did it, didn't it? I'll go get Bri and you can refresh your memory at the door." With that, Tomer headed over to Brianna, who was most upset to be woken from her nap.
Jack stood at the door of Kara and Tomer’s quarters. Faltan Station was a lovely place to live but the locals weren’t the best neighbours. He knew they’d be safer once the space station being built on the edge of the system was functional and all crew would transfer aboard and out of reach of the Faltan’s. He held a bunch of flowers and a bottle of Moët which he was able to source on Earth before he left.
Kara made her way across to the door. She smiled as she greeted her father. “Dad it’s so good to see you! Come on in, Tomer is just getting Brianna.” She grinned as she looked at the flowers. “For me?”
“Well, the flowers most definitely are and the bottle is for everyone.” Jack said with a smile as he held his arms apart wanting a hug from his eldest daughter.
“I’ve missed you dad” Kara grinned as she gave her father a hug. “Would you mind putting those in some water for me? I’m still pretty ... sore and it hurts to be on my feet for too long.” She moved across to the sofa and took a seat with a relaxed sigh. “Brianna’s birth didn’t go entirely to plan, the Doctor had to perform an old fashioned Caesarian section. It’s taking longer to recover from.”
From the other room, Kara and Jack could hear a whine and then a cry. Tomer's voice could then be heard, "Now, now, Bri. Your zayde is here. We can't act like this. Let's get you in that onesie and out to say hello, right?" The crying stopped.
A few seconds later, Tomer came out carrying an infant girl in a yellow onesie that had a little teddy bear on it. He was bouncing her up and down. "Looky looky what I found here. It is an ima and a zayde. Which do you want to say hi to first, Bri bear?"
“May I?” Jack asked with a smile, looking at the small baby girl Tomer held, as he passed the flowers and bottle of champagne to Kara.
Carefully, Tomer handed over Brianna to her grandfather. "Just make sure to support her head just here and.... Sorry, sir. You have likely done this before."
Kara watched proudly as Tomer handed over their daughter to her grandfather. “As you can see she inherited the spots.” Kara grinned. “We weren’t sure if she would given that she’s more genetically Human than Trill. She has a set of lungs like a Human too!” She pulled a funny face.
“I bet she has.” Jack said before beginning to make funny faces at the little girl. “She’s absolutely perfect.” Jack added before looking at either side of her face. “The brown spots are pretty cute, I’m guessing she’s going to inherit her mother’s looks.” He said looking at Tomer.
"Well, we certainly would not want her to look as ugly as me," Tomer told the Captain. "Just because your daughter is blind is no excuse to pass those genetics onto our daughter." He laughed lightly.
“I agree.” Teased Jack, as he was besotted by Brianna’s cooing.
“Just look at that” Kara grinned. “Two minutes and she’s already got her grandfather besotted. I have to admit that outfit does look extremely cute! You’ll have to thank your mother for it Imzadi.”
"Oh, you can thank her in person when she arrives. My understanding is that my parents could arrive at any time. My mother was most put out that she could not be here for the birth." Tomer chuckled lightly.
“Ah meeting the in-laws. Sounds fun.” Jack replied with a cheeky wink.
Kara looked at he father. “She sleeps a good three to four hours between feeds so it gives me some time to sleep. I also have a wonderful husband who takes his turn doing feeds.” She smiled warmly at Tomer. “You’re a natural aren’t you my love?”
"If you say so, Spots." He looked lovingly at his wife. "I just need to make sure this little Captain here gets nice and strong and is ready for all the challenges of the world. She certainly will have a nice diverse set of genes to pull from."
“That’s true!” Kara grinned and looked at her father. “Are you going to be staying at the station for any length of time? It would be nice to spend some time together, I just found you and then we were reassigned.”
“I’m here for a few days. I’ll spend spreading my time between the Kumari and Faltan Station. I need to introduce myself to the command team here at some point. But spending some time together sounds fun.” Jack said without taking his eyes off his granddaughter.
"I have no doubt that Bri has her grandfather totally smitten!" Kara grinned. "I certainly hope we'll get to see you often. I know with Starfleet that can't be guaranteed but I can hope."
“I’ve been placed in command of operations regarding the Sovereignty of Kahless, so I’ll be using Faltan Station as my base of operations. Well, as long as Commander M’Mira will have me.” Jack said as he stroked Brianna’s cheek.
“I think she’ll be more than happy to have you and the ship here.” Kara smiled. “Don’t you think so Imzadi?” She looked at Tomer.
"You know it, Besherta. The more family, the merrier. Besides, we have to think of her bat mitzvah in now, less than 13 years, right?" Tomer started to tear up with pride. "Maybe we can do that back on Earth and use an ancient Torah. Nothing but the best for my little Bri."
“Let me know if you need a lift. With the Kumari having a slipstream drive it’ll cut the commute in half.” Jack offered as Brianna began to tune up. “I think she’s had enough of me.”
Kara smiled as she motioned for her father to hand Briana to her. “She needs a change and she’s probably getting hungry again.”
"Another change?" Tomer asked astonished. "I just changed her before bringing her out here." He shook his head. "Do you want me to take care of that Besherta or do you want to do that while you're feeding her?"
“I could be wrong about the change!” Kara grinned. “Would you like to feed her while I spend a little father, daughter time?”
"Yes, my love," Tomer responded obediently. He then took Bri and said, "Alright, my little hungry captain. Let's get you some yummy milk and end those fussies of yours." He walked out of the room with their child, while humming softly to the baby.
“So how are things with you dad?” Kara looked at her father. “When Tomer and I accepted the transfer here I didn’t think the Kumari was going to be up and running again anytime soon. I almost wish we hadn’t moved on now, it means I have to miss out on time with you.”
“Yeah, they’re ok.” Jack said as he moved towards an empty seat and sat down. “Getting over what I’d been through had been very difficult but that’s to Starfleet medical, they got me back to where I should be.” He lied, it had been a much more difficult road than he’d like to admit, Kara had enough on her plate without the extra worry of him.
“As for Kumari, she’s still in dry dock being completely rebuilt. She was too new to scrap so they’re sorting her out. I asked for a desk job when I was cleared for active duty again but they wanted me out here dealing with the Klingon’s SoK problem. They assigned a new ship and gave me special permission to name her Kumari. Seems that’s my ship name regardless of the class.” He said with a chuckle. “How have you been? You seemed settled here and Brianna is just gorgeous.”
“She is” Kara smiled proudly. “We’ve settled in pretty well actually. The only thing that’s gone awry so far was Bri’s birth apart from that it’s all going well. So ...” she looked at her father curiously. “Why is it you’re making out all is okay with you when you know very well they’re not? I can sense that you’re lying dad.”
“Wait, what happened with Bri’s birth?” Jack asked with a frown.
“It seems I gave the doctor a scare” Kara smiled. “All I know is I started to haemorrhage and passed out. The doc had no choice but to perform an old fashioned Caesarian to get Bri out, fortunately he managed to stop the bleeding without the need for a hysterectomy. It’s just taking more time for me to get over than it normally would.”
“And you didn’t think your father needed to know this?!” Jack said shocked. The letter he had received from Kara just told him when Brianna was born and both mum and baby were doing well. Nothing about any complications.
“I didn’t want to worry you! Plus I’m fine and so is Bri.” Kara gave her father a guilty look. “Sorry dad I should have told you sooner. Forgive me?”
“Of course I forgive you but I’ve missed so much of your life already, it’ll be nice to know somethings.” Jack replied with a warm smile. “As long as you and Brianna are ok, that’s all that matters.”
